  4.     He may be a U.S. Senator, but Minnesota Republican Dave
  5. Durenberger is not known as a best-selling author. So why did his
  6. books on health care and national-security policy show such a hefty
  7. profit?

  9.     Apparently because the Senator arranged for $200,000 in fees
  10. for speeches he delivered in 1985 and 1986 to be paid to his
  11. publisher, Minneapolis-based Piranha Press. Piranha in turn gave
  12. Durenberger $100,000 for promoting his books, even though several
  13. sponsors have said the books were not displayed or sold during the
  14. Senator's appearances.

  16.     Durenberger insists he cleared the deal through the Federal
  17. Election Commission and has broken no Senate rules. But the Senate
  18. ethics committee is investigating whether he used the arrangement
  19. to launder his speaking fees.
